G. Edward Gibson, Jr.

G. Edward Gibson, Jr.

Edd Gibson is Professor and Sunstate Chair of Construction Management and Engineering in the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State University.

Gibson received nominations for this award from some of the greatest practitioners in our industry, including ENR’s Jan Tuchman, past Tucker Award recipient Jimmy Slaughter, namesake of another CII award James C. Porter, and Richard Tucker himself. Perhaps more surprisingly, this honor marks the second time Edd has received the Richard L. Tucker Service Award. In 2020, The National Academy of Construction named him the first recipient of their award by the same name.

Originally from Alabama, Gibson’s educational background includes a bachelor's degree and doctorate in civil engineering from Auburn University and an MBA in Engineering Management from the University of Dallas. He has taught on the university level for over 30 years and has delivered more than 215 short courses to industry practitioners during that time, receiving awards for university and continuing education instruction.

Dr. Gibson began his academic career at North Carolina State University. Prior to academia, he served as a U.S. Army officer and gained several years of industry experience, and he is a licensed professional engineer in Texas. Gibson began his association with CII while he was a faculty member at The University of Texas at Austin. After 15 years in Austin, he started the accredited construction engineering program at the University of Alabama. Later he joined the Del E. Webb School of Construction within the School of Sustainable Engineering and the Built Environment at Arizona State. Gibson has held many leadership positions in Tempe over the years, including the Director of the Program. He has led development and significant fundraising efforts for ASU, bringing in over $23 million in donations during his tenure.

Edd was instrumental in developing a number of CII tools: the suite of Project Definition Rating Index (PDRI) tools, the Front End Engineering Design Maturity and Accuracy Total Rating System (FEED MATRS) tool and the Integrated Project Risk Assessment (IPRA) tool. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Construction and a Distinguished Member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) among many other distinctions and awards. Over the decades, Gibson has won many CII awards, including Distinguished Professor, Outstanding Instructor, and Outstanding Researcher (twice).

CII is pleased to honor Edd Gibson with the Richard L. Tucker Leadership & Service Award.
