IR105-2 – Compass: Communications Project Assessment Tool, Version 2.0

Section 1 – Introduction

About this tool

Welcome to the second version of the Communications Project Assessment Tool, “Compass.” The first version was developed by the Construction Industry Institute (CII) Project Team Communications Research Team (RT 105) and was released in its original format in 1996. In 2011, the CII Knowledge Management Committee (KMC) reviewed the original publications and then updated and published the second version in Microsoft Excel 2007 format, along with a second version of the team’s research summary. The Compass tool is designed to enable project managers to assess project team communications during the execution phases of EPC projects. The tool targets three project groups: project management, engineering, and construction.

Structure

This tool consists of eleven tabs organized into the following four sections.

  • Section 1 – For all users. (Two tabs) The Introduction tab describes the tool and provides links to the questionnaires. The User’s Guide describes the Communications Improvement Process.
  • Section 2 – For the Project Manager. (Two tabs) The Project Information and the Project Information Responses. The purpose of this section is to capture descriptive information about the project. Input given in this section is not part of the Communications Effectiveness score.
  • Section 3 – For all users. (Two tabs each for Project Management, Engineering, and Construction, respectively) The Communications Effectiveness Questionnaires each contain 13 multiple-choice questions. This section can be used by up to 10 people from each stakeholder group, e.g., Project Management, Engineering, and Construction. Input to this part is used to calculate the Communications Effectiveness score and other tool outputs.
  • Section 4 – For all users. (One tab) The Reports section generates the Communications Effectiveness scores, along with data charts and comparisons to CII benchmarks.
