Life cycle management based on Multi-D® Technology at Rostov NP

ASE Engineering Company is an Engineering Division of ROSATOM Group, Russian Federation national nuclear corporation. ASE combines a complete EPC offering: from design to operation solutions and decommissioning.

Due to significant growth of ASE’s order book (from two units to 30) after the integration, ASE focused on the development of a life cycle management system. In 2009 the corporate program “Establishment of project management system for construction of complex engineering facilities on the basis of Multi-D® technology” was launched in order to establish and improve the project management system.

The project of Rostov NPP 1000 MW Power Unit 3, where Multi-D® technology was fully implemented, commissioned in 2009–2015, is presented. Rostov NPP is one of the leading power industry enterprises of the southern federal district of Russia. It provides 40% of Rostov region power generation and the construction investment amount exceeds $1 billion USD.

Pioneering Use of Glass Fiber Reinforced Polymer (GFRP) Composites for Navigational Structure Product

ERDC-CERL engineers produced a novel composite material product that has proven to be a successful replacement for standard chanoine-type wicket gates made of white oak. This innovation is the first composite material-made navigational structure to be used by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), which has a primary mission of maintaining navigation on the nation’s valuable waterways.

Wicket gates are used to create an adjustable dam, depending on river conditions. During low water, the wicket gates are raised upright to maintain pool levels for navigation. During high water, the gates are lowered to the bottom, creating a navigable pass which allows river traffic to flow without locking through the lock chamber.

The current standards for measuring concrete floor flatness mention a basic assumption that you can’t measure every square inch of the deck. Now you can.

DPR Construction pioneered it using 3D laser-scanning technology to perform concrete floor flatness analysis in compliance with ASTM E1155 standards on multiple projects across the nation.

A partnership with Rithm, a software developer, and close collaboration with DPR’s Self-Perform Concrete group enabled rapid feedback and workflow refinement during the evaluation and validation of this new method of floor flatness and levelness analysis.

Costain, Alstom, TSO

Semi-Automated Drilling machine for Tunnel fit-out at Crossrail (C610) Systemwide

The semi-automated drilling machine project for drilling holes during tunnel fit-out is a collaborative project between Costain, Alstom, TSO with technology supplied by MobiBiz/Enable My Team (EMT) and Rowa.

At Crossrail, this project is responsible for automating drilling of holes for fit-out in 250,000 tunnel segments. Segments in a tunnel ring can appear in at any given angle and drilling has to avoid no-drill zones in every segment. It’s like giving a drill to a person with a blindfold and asking that person to do precise drilling, at the most optimized position without hitting any no-drill zones as well as taking into account tunnel curvature, super elevation, and pitch. And to do this perfectly along the length of the 42km (137,795 feet) tunnel.

EMT worked with surveyors at ATC to overcome the complex problem of curvature, elevation and pitch by studying the rules, patterns and then devising an algorithm to extract the key segment for each ring, create a generic local mapping of a tunnel segment (for three different segment types) to map out the no-drill zones and then apply it to an intelligent model that understands where not to drill.

Outputs from EMT drilling position calculator were then fed into a custom designed drilling machine robot manufactured by Rowa.

Carol C. Menassa

Dr. Carol C. Menassa is an associate professor and the John L. Tishman Faculty Scholar at the University of Michigan. She was the M.A. Mortenson Company Assistant Professor of Construction Engineering and Management at the University of Wisconsin–Madison from 2009 to 2013. She received her PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) and MS in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and her MS and BE in CEE from the American University of Beirut.

Autonomous Machine Vision Bridge and Tunnel Strike Prevention System

This project is a first-of-a-kind deployment using an autonomous machine vision-based system for the prevention of bridge and tunnel strikes; a phenomenon occurring every 4.5 hours worldwide. The project proposes to provide a step-change in the way we protect and monitor civil infrastructure: road, rail, and bridges by using intelligent transportation technology to help solve today’s asset management challenges for infrastructure owners.
