Creative Solutions to Complex Problems
Dr. Gaylen Paulson

Elegant solutions may appear obvious in hindsight, but are difficult to identify in the moment. During this interactive session we’ll learn very practical strategies for discovering creative solutions. Individual problem solving methods and tactics will be explored, along with ways to overcome barriers to innovative thinking. We then learn ways to approach interpersonal issues, emphasizing techniques for promoting collaboration and overcoming the emotional and psychological barriers of conflict. Finally, you’ll learn ways to better manage and solve problems as a member of a team or group. Going beyond brainstorming, we’ll explore tactics to harness the creative energy of the group while avoiding “analysis paralysis” and the dreaded “groupthink.”

  • Accounting and finance are the languages of business and you need to have a basic understanding to communicate effectively.
  • Being able to describe the value proposition and determine Return on Investment (ROI) will enable you to:
    • Get more corporate resources. Internally, the better you can communicate the value proposition, the more likely you are to get corporate resources.
    • Become a more effective sales person. Externally, the better you can communicate the ROI of your product or service to your customer, the more effective you will become as a sales and marketing person.
    • Move into greater leadership roles. You will need to communicate with both internal executives and external stakeholders using accounting and financial terms as you progress in you careers.

Making the Senior Leadership Leap

There are four levels of activity in large organizations:

  1. Direct contributor
  2. First-line manager
  3. Mid-level manager
  4. Senior executive

Each of these levels is significantly different from the ones preceding it. Using a guided discovery approach, this hands-on segment addresses the changes in thinking and behavior required when one transitions from being a good manager to being a great manager, and then to a senior executive. Each participant creates a personal list of new leadership habits needed to make the leap to senior leadership positions and learns the techniques for developing those habits.

This seminar introduces the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, a positive measure of adult style frequently used in professional education programs. Feedback from the MBTI has been used to develop synergistic teams, to target communication, to individualize stress management, to dramatically improve problem-solving, and to provide strategies for change management. By the end of the session, participants should be able to identify their preferred approaches to spoken and written communication, leverage opposite styles of communication for faster, more comprehensive problem-solving, and navigate and pace change management by strategic combining of organizing and flexing styles.
