Quantitative Validation and Deployment of the I2PD Approach

Overview

Most industrial capital projects are inherently complex and challenging. Given the complex nature of these projects, collaborative delivery approaches may be especially desirable and applicable for them. Former CII RT-341 suggested that Industrial Integrated Project Delivery (I2PD) could lead to better project performance and increase the probability of successfully achieving the business objectives of an industrial project. RT-341’s findings indicated that industrial projects are good candidates for integrated delivery. The team provided guidance to structure industrial integrated project delivery by balancing experiences in the commercial buildings and infrastructure sectors. The result was a set of principles and methods that, when implemented, were expected to improve project performance by enabling integrated and collaborative delivery.

RT-383’s research further explored the quantitative validation and deployment of the I2PD approach with the following value-added questions:

  • What kind of project is a good fit for I2PD?
  • Which characteristics of industrial projects make them good candidates to experience the benefits of I2PD?
  • What is the relative importance (and priority) of I2PD principles and methods to achieving collaboration, integration, and project success?
  • How can a project team successfully implement collaboration and integration (CI) methods with confidence?

RT-383 developed tools and guidance to support I2PD projects with the assistance of subject matter expert workshops, an industry-wide questionnaire survey, and case study interviews. The team systematically evaluated project uncertainty to determine the suitability of I2PD for projects, the optimal set of CI methods, and a practical process for implementing those methods. The findings of this research will benefit industrial sector practitioners who wish to implement I2PD as a project delivery by helping them understand the I2PD process and supporting decision-making throughout the project life cycle. The team incorporated its findings into Excel-based tools, which can be applied to support the I2PD project decision-making process as the figure below shows.

Key Findings and Implementation Tools

1 : I2PD Project Selection Tool

RT-383 developed the I2PD Project Selection Tool, a decision-support instrument for assessing and measuring project uncertainty. Figure 1 shows how this Excel-based tool helps a team decide whether I2PD is suitable for its project (FR-383, p. 7).

2 : A Tool for Selecting CI Principles and Methods

RT-383 also developed an Excel-based CI Methods Selection Tool (FR-383, p. 16). This tool applies a user’s selections to generate two validated indices (shown in Figure 2):

  1. The Uncertainty Index determines what level of collaboration and integration a project requires.
  2. The CI Index determines the appropriate frequency and intensity of applying CI methods that the tool selects for the project. If a project’s uncertainty index is high, the project team should adopt more CI methods to meet the required level of collaboration and integration.

3 : Identifying and Weighting I2PD Project Selection Criteria (Project Uncertainty)

RT-383 identified project uncertainty criteria – nine indicators for design, plus another 14 for execution – to assess a project’s suitability for I2PD. The team found that projects with high degrees of uncertainty in design and execution made the best candidates for I2PD (FR-383, p. 33).

4 : Project Characteristics Can Help a Team Select CI Methods

RT-383 analyzed data from 69 industrial projects, identified how the projects applied CI methods, and used the results to prioritize the methods (FR-383, p. 25). As Figure 3 shows, the team sorted the CI methods into three tiers of relative applicability based on project characteristics and the organization’s level of experience:

  • Tier 1 CI methods: the essential set of CI methods
  • Tier 2 CI methods: a set of highly recommended CI methods
  • Tier 3 CI methods: a set of other recommended CI methods

5 : The 5W1H Approach Offers Implementation Guidance for the CI Methods

RT-383 developed a comprehensive manual for each CI method so industrial practitioners can implement these methods with confidence (FR-383, p. 38). The CI implementation guidance adopted the 5W1H approach (e.g., what, who, where, when, why, and how) to provide rich context for each method (see Figure 4).
