Abstract

RT-398 aimed to enhance the visibility and adoption of CII publications by developing a quick-start reference handbook tailored to specific project characteristics. The resulting final report, Fit-for-Purpose Tools for Using CII Best Practices and Managing Complexity (FR-398), offers streamlined access to essential and recommended tools through a user-friendly interface. It acknowledges the growing complexity of construction projects driven by emerging technologies and evolving delivery methods.

The BP Primer tool (available in Excel and Power BI formats) enables project managers to proactively address challenges by offering structured, phase-specific access to CII Best Practices. It includes executive summaries, golden nuggets aligned with project phases, detailed action items (DAIs), and direct links to full research reports. This layered approach—from high-level insights to in-depth guidance—minimizes information overload, supports informed decision-making, and improves stakeholder communication throughout the project lifecycle.

PCAM 2.0 (Project Complexity Assessment and Management) simplifies complexity evaluation and strategy selection. Building on RT-305, the tool was redesigned for greater usability and industry uptake. It reduces complexity indicators from 37 to 14 and replaces a 9-level scoring system with a binary format, lowering cognitive load. Users can choose from four assessment modes: general streamlined, phase-based, complexity area-based, and detailed general. Visual aids like radar diagrams and complexity gauges enhance usability, while condensed management strategies facilitate quicker understanding and action.
