CII Benchmarking

CII provides two benchmarking programs:

  • Corporate Safety Benchmarking Program
  • Best Practice Implementation Benchmarking Program
These programs provide tools for organizations to evaluate safety and project performance. By participating, CII member organizations can gain a clear view of their standing relative to industry peers, allowing them to identify specific areas where they can leverage CII’s library of tools and best practices to drive improvement.

Member-Led Benchmarking

Your team captures project data using CII's standardized questionnaires and submits it on your timeline.

Included with CII Membership

CII Benchmarking is available to all members at no additional cost. Your membership gives you full access to the tools.

Secure and Trusted Data Environment

Benchmarking data is securley hosted on the University of Texas servers. Data protection is ensured through CII protocols and UT regulations.

Corporate Safety Benchmarking

Since 1989, CII has collected corporate-level safety data to help members understand industry trends and their own relative position.

  • What You Get: An annual view of corporate safety performance (TRIR, DART, etc.) across CII members.
  • The Output: An Annual Safety Report (published every Fall) featuring industry-wide charts and trend analysis.
  • The Path to Improvement:
    1. Download: Get the Data Collection Tool (Excel) from our "Getting Started" page.
    2. Submit: Provide your corporate-level data.
    3. Benchmark: Use the annual report to see where your organization sits on the industry curve and inform your internal safety strategies.

Best Practice Implementation Benchmarking

This program analyzes the relationship between the use of CII Best Practices and project outcomes. It is designed to answer a critical question: How does our level of implementation impact our cost and schedule predictability? But, it also addresses the questions: 1) How does my project’s cost and schedule performance compare to similar projects? 2) How does the implementation of best practices in my project compared to other similar projects?

  • What You Get: An annual view of corporate safety performance (TRIR, DART, etc.) across CII members.
    • Corporate-level Benchmarks: An assessment of how your organization adopts practices across the board.
    • Project-level Benchmarks: Individual project performance benchmarks (primarily for cost and schedule growth) along with benchmarks of best practice use.
  • The Output: Visualize results and explore dashboards in the CII Data Warehouse.
  • The Path to Improvement:
    1. Learn: Take our on-demand course to understand the benchmarking basics (under development).
    2. Collect: Use the Data Collection Toolkit (Excel) to gather project or corporate data.
    3. Analyze: Log in to the CII Data Warehouse to explore your results and identify variances.
    4. Bridge the Gap: Use your findings to investigate which CII Tools and Publications will help you improve.
