Announcing a CII AI Initiative

May 28, 2025
We are excited to announce that CII is embarking on a groundbreaking collaboration with Dr. Krishna Kumar from UT Austin to explore how artificial intelligence can enhance the dissemination of CII research. This initiative aims to leverage Large Language Models to more effectively disseminate research findings and empower CII members to learn about CII research outcomes and resources and ultimately improve project outcomes.

Dr. Kumar earned a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge in 2015. His expertise spans high-performance computing, numerical modeling, and the application of AI to understand natural hazards. In 2023, he received a $7 million grant from the National Science Foundation’s Strengthen the Cyberinfrastructure Professionals Ecosystem (SCIPE) program for a community initiative called Chishiki.ai. This community aims to unite civil engineers, cyberinfrastructure professionals, and AI experts to better understand and protect virtual and physical infrastructure. “We aspire to use AI to unlock the potential of data, accelerate simulations, and build digital twins, revolutionizing our approach to designing and building sustainable cities and tackling critical challenges,” said Dr. Kumar. “To do that, we need to bring people with civil engineering expertise together with AI experts to learn from each other.” Dr. Kumar also co-leads the National AI Research Resource Initiative (NAIRR) project on advancing AI development for engineering.

Dr. Kumar’s advanced AI expertise will be key to enabling us to develop the “CII GPT” and study ways to expand and incorporate CII research outcomes into the model. As part of this initiative, we plan to launch the “CII GPT” in late June with early access provided to selected CII implementation SMEs for testing.

Our goal is to open the system to all CII members by September 2025. Following that launch, we will continuously learn and improve incorporation of research results into the CII AI model.
