Modularization

Delivering Value Through Early Planning and Standardization

Modularization offers significant opportunities to improve project outcomes, but MCBA members emphasized that success depends on much more than off-site fabrication alone.

MCBA key insights:

  •     Early decisions are critical. Projects achieve the greatest benefits when modularization is evaluated and incorporated during front-end planning.
  •     Design maturity drives success. Stable, well-developed designs help avoid costly changes that can diminish modularization benefits.
  •     Standardization creates value. Reusing designs, processes, suppliers, and lessons learned improves predictability and execution performance.
  •     The business case extends beyond cost. Benefits such as improved safety, reduced field labor, higher quality, and greater schedule certainty should be considered alongside direct cost impacts.
