Work Zone Safety: It’s More Than Just Traffic Control

National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) returns April 20–24, 2026. While the orange cones are the most visible part of the campaign, for CII members, this week is a reminder that roadway safety is a high-stakes planning and execution challenge, not just a compliance checkbox.

Safety in the zone isn't just about how the public drives—it’s about how we manage the interface between live traffic, heavy equipment, and our people.

Why This Matters for Project Leaders

According to the FHWA, effective work zone management does two things: it saves lives and keeps project delivery on track. For CII organizations, the focus should shift from general "awareness" to reducing exposure.

To sharpen your site safety this week, push your teams to move beyond the basics with these four checks:
  • Review the "Internal" Traffic: Are workers protected from construction vehicles and backing equipment inside the barriers?
  • Dynamic Planning: Are traffic control plans being updated as site conditions evolve, or are we relying on a static plan from day one?
  • Visibility Standards: Beyond high-vis gear, are we optimizing lighting and signage for night shifts or inclement weather?
  • Briefing Quality: Are "Toolbox Talks" becoming a routine drone, or are they addressing the specific hazards of today’s specific tasks?

Take Action

Don't just hang a poster—use this week to audit one or two high-risk operations. If you need materials to kickstart the conversation, leverage these industry staples:
  • NWZAW Official Site: Campaign posters and "Go Orange Day" (April 22) details.
  • OSHA Safety Resources: Specific guidelines on barricades, signals, and highway worker protection.
  • FHWA Guidance: Best practices for work zone management and mobility.
  • CII SET Resources

The Bottom Line: Awareness gets people to look; consistent field execution gets them home. Let’s use this week to tighten our protocols and protect the industry’s most valuable asset: its people.
