CII Corporate Safety Benchmarking

Since 1989, CII has been tracking safety performance for the purpose of helping our members understand their safety performance.

The annual CII Safety Survey was designed to collect capital project data from construction owners and contractors, making this information available in a confidential, aggregated format to enable corporate-level benchmarking. Results are published annually in the CII Safety Summary Report.

All data provided are treated as "company confidential." These data will not be communicated in any form to any party other than to CII. Any data or analyses based on these data that are shared with others or published will represent summaries of data from multiple organizations participating in the survey which have been aggregated in a way that will preclude the identification of proprietary data and the specific performance of individual organizations.

Why Participate in the CII Corporate Safety Survey?

CII’s main goal is to provide a resource that drives safety improvement. Organizations use the results to benchmark their safety rates, making this one of the most downloaded CII publications.

Who Should Submit Data?

CII encourages all organizations with active membership in the calendar year to submit their data. CII typically contacts the individual identified as the safety survey contact, cc’ing the CII Board Advisor and Alternates.

If your organization has not identified a safety survey contact, the CII Board Advisor and Alternates are contacted.

You can request to be set as a point of contact by sending an email to analytics@cii.utexas.edu

When, how and what data is collected?

Data is collected via an Excel spreadsheet.  Members can download the sheet (which is also sent via email) and send it back to CII to the address included in the file.

When is the Deadline to Submit our Safety Survey?

CII collects data for the previous calendar year between February through May each year. We normally announce the Safety Survey results at the CII Annual Conference.

The deadline for the 2026 survey is June 1, 2026

Collected data fields

The survey focuses on safety statistics for capital facility projects only. Data for operations and maintenance activities should be excluded, especially if you work for an owner organization.

The survey collects the following data fields, by location (Domestic/International) and Industry sector, and by type (Field, and office):
  • Work hours
  • Number of Recordable Incident cases
  • Days Away cases
  • Restricted and Transfer cases
  • Fatalities
