The State of AI for Construction Safety
CII Research Team 422 (RT-422) set out to close the gap between artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and safety needs in the construction industry. The team identified critical safety challenges where AI can deliver the most value, spotlighted relevant use cases, cataloged existing tools, and developed actionable guidance for implementation. The research emphasized real-world applications of AI across key phases of construction—design/engineering, planning/pre-operations, and active operations—focusing on five priority safety challenges.
To support industry adoption, the team developed the AI for Safety Selection and Implementation Guide Tool. This interactive resource helps users pinpoint suitable AI use cases for safety-related issues, explore detailed insights into associated challenges and benefits, understand development workflows, and assess the current status, maturity, feasibility, and key considerations of AI applications in construction safety.
