Crane Operation Readiness Assessment
Cranes are indispensable to construction projects, enabling the lifting and precise placement of structural members, equipment, and materials that cannot be handled by other means. At the same time, crane operations are associated with some of the most serious construction incidents. Because approximately 93% of crane accidents are linked to human factors rather than equipment failure, many are preventable through rigorous planning, preparation, and pre-lift verification. However, existing requirements are dispersed across multiple industry standards, making it difficult for project teams to apply them consistently and assign clear accountability.
The Crane Operation Readiness Assessment (CORA), developed by CII Research Team 434 (RT-434), addresses this gap by providing a structured, integrated readiness framework. CORA consolidates readiness criteria, responsible parties, and verification timing into a single, coordinated tool. It includes three components: the CORA Spreadsheet, which supports the full assessment process; the CORA Reference Card, which highlights key readiness checks; and the CORA One-Pager, which offers a concise, at-a-glance overview.
This implementation resource outlines CORA’s role definitions, responsibility framework, spreadsheet structure, assessment workflow, and illustrative examples. By aligning what must be verified, who is accountable, and when checks must occur, CORA enables project teams to treat readiness as a confirmed outcome—not an assumption.
