RT-434: Readiness Assessment for Safe Crane Operations

CII Research Team 434 (RT-434) delivers a practical framework that helps project teams align on roles and responsibilities in crane operations—reducing risk and strengthening jobsite safety across projects of all sizes and industry segments. Crane operations involve multiple stakeholders, and safety performance improves when everyone has a shared understanding of who is responsible for what. With that goal in mind, RT-434 introduces the Crane Operation Readiness Assessment (CORA), a structured tool that supports consistent alignment among owners, contractors, and crane operators. CORA uses targeted readiness questions across three phases—planning, mobilization, and pre-operation—and maps each question to specific roles using a RACI framework. To accommodate different crane operation types and complexities, the tool is organized into three levels, ranging from high-level checks to detailed, actionable items. Like the best CII tools, CORA is designed to drive the right conversations at the right time, helping teams clearly understand roles and responsibilities and consistently execute safer crane operations. During the conference session, the RT-434 team will introduce the CORA tool and explain how project organizations can benefit from this timely resource.
