Abstract

Supplier qualification is a critical driver of capital project success, influencing cost, schedule, quality, safety, and supply chain resilience. While most organizations maintain formal qualification programs, these efforts often focus on traditional criteria such as financial stability, safety performance, and quality systems, with limited consideration of innovation and collaboration. CII Research Team 413 (RT-413) analyzed 34 case studies to identify how innovative, collaborative suppliers create measurable project value. The research found that suppliers with attributes such as adaptability, technical expertise, continuous improvement, transparent communication, aligned goals, and a collaborative mindset consistently contribute to stronger project outcomes.

IR-413a, Guidelines for Effective Supplier Qualification Programs to Promote Innovation, Collaboration, and Project Performance, details RT-413's recommendations by providing organizations with a framework to improve supplier selection, reduce risk, increase project predictability, and enhance overall project outcomes.
