CII's 2019 Research Publications - Now Available

November 8, 2019

Many thanks to our members and research teams for making 2019 a strong year at CII!

FR-UMM-01 - Achieving Higher Levels of Facility Standardization in the Upstream, Midstream, and Mining (UMM) Commodity Market: Four Solution Pieces

This publication offers four solution elements to help industry participants in the UMM sector to recognize the economic value that depends on facility standardization, and to prepare to exploit higher levels of standardization. This publication is accompanied by an Excel-based Standardization Decision-making Model that helps users consider the benefits, drivers, risks, and impediments of facility standardization.

FR-MLS-01 - Flexible Facility Development for Manufacturing and Life Sciences

This product provides a structured approach for owners and service providers to make informed decisions about designing flexibility into the facility and infrastructure. It includes three proof-of-concept Microsoft Excel-based tools that form the Manufacturing Facility Flexibility Decision Support Suite. The report also offers a general process map that identifies CII’s existing tools and when each should be used in an existing FEL process.

FR-320A - Leading Indicators for the Prevention of Building Design Defects

The U.S. Department of State funded this study into the prevention of design defects, building on the original RT-320 research that focused on industrial projects. This report offers guidance for improving overall building design quality by focusing on the intervention and prevention of design defects. It includes the Design Quality Leading Indicator Tool, a proof-of-concept Excel-based tool (the Design Quality Leading Indicator Tool) that incorporates the 160 leading indicator questions and allows users to identify defects or potential design risks in order to improve the quality of design deliverables in a timely fashion.

FR-FHC-02 - Lifecycle Cost Estimation for Facilities and Healthcare

This report summarizes the state-of-practice methodologies in facility lifecycle costing (LCC) and the resources required for these cost calculations. This book outlines current guidelines, data sources, and tools, and also discusses critical gaps in the existing standards.

DPC2019-2 - 2019 Safety Summary

Summarizes the results of safety data collected through the CII/CURT Safety Portal. While this new portal combines data from CII members and non-members, this document only summarizes safety rates experienced by CII members. From CII’s membership, 57 organizations submitted their corporate safety statistics for the 2018 calendar year, representing a total of 2.67 billion work-hours. Includes corporate-level safety statistics to help CII members benchmark their corporate safety performance. Free download for members and non-members alike.

IR113-2 - PDRI: Project Definition Rating Index -- Industrial Projects, Version 5.0

PDRI: Project Definition Rating Index – Industrial Projects, Version 5.0 – The PDRI–Industrial Projects is one of the leading tools for measuring the completeness of project scope definition on industrial projects. For Version 5.0, RT-361 integrated RT-331’s FEED MATRS with the PDRI–Industrial tool to create the PDRI Maturity and Accuracy Total Rating System (PDRI MATRS).

FR-PUI-01 - A Guide to Regulatory Future-proofing for the Construction Industry

A Guide to Regulatory Future-proofing for the Construction Industry – Offers a regulatory future-proofing framework that regulated entities can follow to anticipate future regulatory actions, take proactive steps to minimize the risks and maximize opportunities created by those regulatory changes.

SP-PUI-01 - Regulatory Research Roadmap

Regulatory Research Roadmap – This special publication surveys the regulatory landscape, summarizing the current state, describing a desired state, and proposing a research program that develops knowledge and tools to move the industry from the current state to the desired state. Members-only download.

FR-TC-01 - Bridging the Gap between Design and Construction Models to Improve Advanced Work Packaging

Bridging the Gap between Design and Construction Models to Improve Advanced Work Packaging – Advanced Work Packaging (AWP) represents a great opportunity to improve the planning and execution of industrial projects, but gaps remain in the flow of information across disciplines. This short study explores the gap between engineering deliverables (specifically the 3D piping model) and construction needs.

FR-TC-02 - Virtual Reality Implementation Guide for Construction Projects

Virtual Reality Implementation Guide for Construction Projects – A guide to implement immersive virtual reality (IVR) on capital projects. Introduces the key steps of IVR execution at both the company and project levels, including implementation strategies, hardware and software setup, training for developers, model preparation procedures, and a cost-benefit analysis.

FR-DCC-01 - How to Double Productivity

How to Double Productivity – Details the research approach RT-DCC-01 used to develop roadmaps that, if implemented, would develop the knowledge and practices to double the productivity of the downstream and chemicals industrial construction sector. Summarizes innovative solutions created in other domains and identified by the researchers. Presents the three roadmaps that the team offered to the DCC as potential starting points for future research into productivity improvement. Members-only download.

FR-341 - Integrated Project Delivery for Industrial Projects

FR-341 - Integrated Project Delivery for Industrial Projects – Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) was introduced in the U.S. healthcare facilities industry. Alliance Contracting first appeared on public infrastructure projects in Australia and New Zealand. These two approaches use enhanced collaboration and integration strategies and methods to bring greater value for investment. The research findings suggest that industrial project performance is improved by increased collaboration and integration, demonstrating that industrial projects are indeed good candidates for Integrated Project Delivery.

FR-360 - The Future of the Built Environment

The Future of the Built Environment – This project was framed by a question: “What potentially major disruptions await the built environment in the next 10 years?” The researchers identified potential future scenarios to give CII the ability to anticipate potentially disruptive strategic emerging issues, whether they be threats or opportunities. The results of this project fed the development of overarching programs that the CII Funded Studies Committee proposed to the CII Board of Advisors in April 2019. Members-only download.
